The DEWALT DCD791 is an absolute powerhouse. In our torque testing, it consistently pushed heavy fasteners through dense material with less motor hesitation than the Makita. Its build quality feels marginally more robust, with heavy-duty rubber overmolding that can survive severe job site abuse. The downside is the weight and bulk. At 3.5 lbs bare, it is noticeably heavier than the Makita, which leads to quicker fatigue during overhead tasks. Furthermore, DEWALT’s battery ecosystem, while excellent, tends to carry a higher price premium, meaning the overall cost of ownership is steeper if you aren’t already invested in their platform.
Conversely, the Makita XFD17 prioritizes ergonomics and agility. It is significantly lighter and more compact, making it a joy to use in cramped cabinets or during long days of repetitive tasks. The trigger response and speed control are incredibly refined. Its downside lies in its raw top-end power.
