In our smoke and dander tests, it performed admirably, quickly clearing a 400-square-foot room of particulate matter within 30 minutes on its highest setting. The built-in laser dust sensor is highly responsive, automatically kicking the fan up when we started cooking nearby. However, the downside first: the razor-and-blades business model makes this unit significantly more expensive than the sticker price suggests.
Air purifiers are only as good as their filters, and Levoit forces you into their proprietary ecosystem. At $50 a pop, replacing the cylindrical HEPA/Carbon combo filter every four to six months quickly eclipses the initial purchase price of the machine.
