Choose the new base iPhone if you want a lighter phone and the used Pro Max offers only a small saving. Choose the used Pro Max if its larger screen or dedicated telephoto camera solves a need you actually have—and the specific unit passes inspection. A Pro badge alone is not a reason to accept uncertain condition or weak return terms.

The price difference can be surprisingly small. In our US offer snapshots from October 9, 2026, a used iPhone 16 Pro Max with 256GB cost $850, versus $929 for a new, unlocked iPhone 17 with the same storage. Another used 16 Pro Max cost $819, versus $829 for a new iPhone 16 with 128GB. The second comparison buys more storage and Pro features, but saves just $10.

These are dated examples, not guaranteed current deals. We rechecked the four public prices on October 9, 2026 (UTC); the quoted prices were unchanged. Prices are in USD before sales tax. This is a research-based comparison using manufacturer documentation and public listings; we have not tested these individual phones.

Should You Buy a Used Pro Max or a New Regular iPhone?

Start with the job you need the phone to do. For messages, navigation, everyday photos and ordinary video, paying a little more for a new base iPhone can be a sensible way to avoid evaluating someone else’s battery, repair history and seller protection.

If you are also considering a platform change, see our used iPhone versus new Android comparison.

The used Pro Max becomes compelling when its advantages are useful every week: reading or watching on a large display, photographing distant subjects, or using a professional capture workflow. Its condition and price must support that choice. A cheap listing with unresolved locks or broken camera functions is not a bargain.

Separate three things that are often bundled together:

  • Max size: more display area, with a larger and heavier body.
  • Pro features: dedicated telephoto hardware and certain capture or transfer options.
  • Generation: the capabilities of the exact models being compared, regardless of whether the box is new.

A new iPhone 16 and a used iPhone 16 Pro Max belong to the same generation. A new iPhone 17 is a generation newer than that Pro Max. Neither comparison can be settled by treating “new,” “newer” and “better” as interchangeable.

What Does an Older Pro Max Still Do Better?

The iPhone 16 Pro Max offers a 6.9-inch display, dedicated 5x telephoto camera and Pro capture options. Those are concrete reasons to consider it. Its screen size is a benefit of the Max format; telephoto and capture tools are benefits of the Pro tier.

The table below uses the models behind our offers. Features come from Apple’s specifications for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 17 and iPhone 16.

The iPhone 17 is 50g lighter than the 16 Pro Max; the iPhone 16 is 57g lighter. That difference may matter more than another specification if you use your phone one-handed, carry it while exercising or dislike heavy pockets.

ProMotion needs particular care in this comparison. It favors the 16 Pro Max over the base iPhone 16, but the base iPhone 17 has it too. Do not pay for the Pro Max solely to get a smooth display when the new alternative already provides one.

Where Can the New Base iPhone Be the Better Buy?

The clearest advantage is a simpler purchase. You can buy an unused device through Apple with documented sale and warranty terms, instead of relying on a used seller’s description and the history of one particular unit. That has value when the price gap is narrow, especially if inspecting and potentially returning a phone would be difficult for you.

However, “new” does not make every base model a better match. The $829 iPhone 16 example has 128GB; both used Pro Max examples have 256GB. If your current phone already exceeds 128GB of local use, first price a new 256GB alternative. A cheaper capacity that forces you to delete files or change your storage habits is not an equivalent purchase. Our 128GB storage guide helps you check that requirement.

Chip names are not a measured speed ranking: we have no matched sustained-performance test for these offers. For gaming or demanding editing, check the exact workload rather than assuming either A19 or the Pro badge wins.

All three models appear on Apple’s Apple Intelligence compatibility list. That does not establish identical features or speed. Check the specific feature’s software, language and region requirements; AI eligibility alone does not distinguish these pairs.

Prices and descriptions were recorded October 9, 2026. Stock, delivery and checkout totals were not verified. Confirm the full terms before paying. PDX requires return approval and may charge up to 50% in the stated exceptions, including additional wear or a claimed fault it cannot reproduce. The table summarizes the normal route, not every policy condition.

“Used” and “Amazon Renewed” are different purchasing conditions. An Amazon listing must be checked for its named seller, exact condition tier, battery commitment and applicable guarantee or return terms. Do not attach a Renewed promise to an ordinary used phone—or assume every Renewed tier has identical protection. For the purchase-route differences, read new versus used versus renewed iPhone. We have not included an Amazon offer because its complete listing-level price and terms were not verified.

Does a Used Pro Max Still Have Better Battery Life?

It may, but the model name cannot answer that for the phone in your cart. A large phone’s battery advantage can be reduced by wear, previous replacement or a problem with the particular unit. Conversely, a used phone with a well-performing battery may still suit your day comfortably.

Apple rates video playback at up to 33 hours for the 16 Pro Max, 30 hours for the iPhone 17 and 22 hours for the iPhone 16. These manufacturer figures describe controlled testing, not our used listings or your mix of navigation, mobile data, games and calls. They are context, not a prediction of your screen time.

The sellers’ 94% and 95% readings are useful inspection leads. They do not mean a phone will deliver exactly 94% or 95% of its original daily runtime. They also do not establish charging reliability, battery authenticity or how the phone behaves under sustained use.

If your shortlist includes a more worn battery, see whether 85% or 90% battery health is enough for a used iPhone before deciding what condition and price to accept.

Before deciding, request current battery-health information from the actual unit, check relevant service messages and review its parts history where available. Once you receive it, check charging and whether its behavior meets your needs while you can still exercise the applicable remedy.

If battery service is necessary for your intended use, obtain a model-specific quote through Apple’s battery service page or the repair provider you will use. The current US fee remains unverified, so the table uses break-even arithmetic. If your current phone only needs service, first consider replacing its battery versus buying another phone.

Is the Telephoto Camera Worth Buying Used?

It is worth considering when reach changes the shots you can take. School performances, travel details or subjects across a field are situations where you cannot simply move closer. The 16 Pro Max’s dedicated 5x camera supplies a reason to choose it that neither base model in these pairs offers.

For everyday scenes at 1x or occasional 2x framing, that advantage may go unused. Having three rear cameras does not prove that your food photos, family snapshots or indoor pictures will look better. Main-camera processing, motion, exposure and your preferred rendering still matter.

Low light is a separate question from reach. A telephoto label does not guarantee better night images, and the camera’s selected capture path can depend on conditions. Compare samples from the exact models at the distances and lighting you use; look at moving people as well as static buildings. Our optical-quality zoom versus optical zoom guide explains why the labels describe different capture methods.

Video deserves its own decision. If you record ordinary clips and share them directly, a Pro workflow may add little practical value. If you already edit Log footage, use ProRes or transfer large files by cable, those options can matter. Budget for the storage and compatible accessories that your workflow actually requires. Do not treat features you have never used as automatic savings.

For a used camera phone, inspect focus, stabilization, lenses and each relevant camera mode. A defective telephoto removes the main reason for buying that unit.

How Much Cheaper Should the Used Pro Max Be?

There is no defensible universal percentage. The required discount depends on what you gain, what is uncertain and what it would cost to make the particular phone suitable for you.

For the equal-storage pair, the used $850 Pro Max saves $79, about 8.5% of the new iPhone 17’s price. For the unequal-storage pair, the $819 Pro Max saves $10, about 1.2% of the new iPhone 16’s price. The latter is mainly a choice of features and capacity, not a substantial reduction in spending.

OFFER + CONDITION + COST

What the used Pro Max price really includes

  1. The phone

Exact model, storage, carrier status and physical condition.

  2. The battery and parts

Inspect the actual unit and repair history. Battery health is not a runtime estimate.

  3. The purchase terms

Who handles defects? What is the return window? Are there fees?

  4. The extra costs

Add necessary service, accessories, tax and delivery. Keep possible future repairs separate.

Pair A · same 256GB storage

USD 850 used vs USD 929 new

USD 79 sticker saving

USD 79 − extra used-side costs + extra new-side costs = remaining saving.

US listing snapshot · October 9, 2026 · before tax. Conditional costs are not repair quotes.

Use this calculation:

Remaining saving = new purchase price − used purchase price − (used-side additions − new-side additions).

For example, $50 in additional used-side costs reduces Pair A’s saving to $29 and makes Pair B cost $40 more. That $50 is an illustration, not a battery-service quote. Include compulsory costs you have verified; keep possible repairs and returns as separate scenarios.

The return fee is not an automatic ownership expense if you keep the phone. It matters because discovering that you dislike its size could make reversing the purchase expensive. Likewise, unknown costs should remain unknown, rather than silently being entered as zero. This is a purchase-and-scenarios comparison, not a forecast of every dollar you will spend over several years.

An offer can lose its saving before you use it. Keep necessary service costs separate from possible repairs and return fees. A seller promise is not proof of delivered-unit condition.

What Should You Check Before Buying?

Keep the inspection focused on facts that can reverse the decision:

  • Activation and network access: reject a phone still tied to someone else’s Activation Lock. Confirm carrier-lock status and compatibility with your carrier, including the SIM or eSIM setup you need.
  • Battery and repair history: obtain information for the actual unit. Investigate service warnings and parts-history messages; cosmetic grade and battery percentage do not establish repair quality.
  • Essential functions: test Face ID, display and touch, charging, microphones, speakers and the cameras you are buying it for. A failure can erase the price advantage.
  • A workable remedy: read the named seller’s warranty, return deadline, reporting requirements, fees and exclusions. Decide whether you can inspect promptly enough to use them.

Apple’s preowned iPhone checklist covers the inspection steps. Its parts and service history guidance explains what the labels mean. An Unknown Part message needs investigation; absence of a warning is not proof of a pristine history.

Distinguish defect coverage from the ability to return a phone you simply dislike. Apple’s US return policy is not a blanket policy for third-party sellers, and a warranty should not be assumed to cover ordinary battery wear. Avoid both offers if neither meets your storage or essential-feature needs. Reject a used unit with unresolved locks or faults; choose another offer if the seller cannot resolve a material uncertainty.

For the inspection order and observable results, follow our used iPhone checklist before paying.

For Pair A, the new iPhone 17 is a defensible default for someone who has no clear need for a Max screen or 5x camera. The used Pro Max costs only $79 less, while being heavier and requiring inspection. Choose the Pro Max when those specific capabilities matter enough to justify that work and its seller terms.

For Pair B, the used Pro Max can buy a larger display, Pro features and twice the nominal storage for almost the same purchase price. If 128GB meets your needs and you prefer a smaller phone, the new iPhone 16 remains a reasonable choice. If 128GB is insufficient, do not force that comparison: check the price of a suitable new capacity first.

For a longer ownership plan, assess storage, battery condition and repair access. All three models appear on Apple’s current iOS 27 compatibility list; that is present eligibility, not a guaranteed number of remaining update years. Feature availability is a separate check.

Buy the used Pro Max because its advantages are useful and its condition is acceptable. Buy the new base iPhone because it meets your needs at a total cost and purchase experience you prefer.
